Golfer of the year competitions have clubs buzzing

Balla

In last weekend’s competition, Martin Boyle was the winner of the gents’ section with a score of 38pts, Stephen Minogue came home in second place three points back, with Willie McNamee in third place also on 35 points. In the ladies’ competition Aine McDonald was the winner when she scored 37pts. Geraldine Kilgallon came home in second place with 35pts and Kathleen Minogue was third on 34pts. This weekend’s competition is a golfer of the year event and is sponsored by Rocky’s Bar, Castlebar. The presentation of the prizes will take place in Rocky’s Bar on April 15 at 9.30pm. Balla Golf Club is also asking people to support the table quiz in support of Ashling Neary’s project in Ghana, which will take place in Bar One on April 14 at 9pm. Tables cost €40 each

Ballina

Last Sunday in the Ballina Tile and Paint Centre sponsored single Stableford competition, Stephen Langan was the winner with a score of 44pts. He finished just one point ahead of Phonsie McLoughlin in second place, with David Finnerty third with 42pts. A club fund-raising classic will take place tomorrow (Saturday ). The entry fee for the event will be €100 per team. A time sheet will be in operation and for more information contact the club office on 096 21050.

With the new golf season getting into full swing, Ballina Golf Club is offering an attractive package to new members and those taking up golf for the first time. Cut price beginner rates, introductory golf lessons, presentations on golf rules and etiquette, and beginner competitions are all geared to making membership of Ballina Golf Club excellent value for money.

Ballaghaderreen

In last Sunday’s 18 hole Stableford competition, the winner was Sean McLoughlin with a score of 39pts, he finished one point ahead of John Curran in second place.

Ballyhaunis

Marina Coyne was the winner of the ladies section of last weekend’s Homecare Medical Supplies sponsored Stableford competition in Ballyhaunis. She finished three points ahead of Fiona Prenty in second place. In the gents’ competition Gavin Potgieter was the first man home. He finished ahead of Tom Meehan and Christy Freeman in third place.

Castlebar

In the ladies’ competition on Sunday last in Castlebar Golf Club, Mary Lawlor was the winner of the ladies’ section. She scored 37, with Antoinette Starken finishing just behind her in second place. Breda Mulroy came home in third, with Sheila Baynes finishing in fourth. In the Allied Financial two day event, Brendan Frost won the competition with his score of 41pts. Paul Kilcourse was the second place finisher one point behind, Darren Flynn was third, with Michael Flynn the gross winner. This weekend the golfer of the year competition is sponsored by Mulroy’s Service Station. Next Wednesday April 13 is an open charity day in aid of St Brid’s.

Mulranny

Christy McDonnell was the winner of Horkan’s Garden Centre, Turlough, sponsored Stableford competition on Sunday with a score of 38 pts, pipping vice-captain Martin McLoughlin on the back nine. Liam Walsh finished in third place on 37 pts (B9 )

Westport

In the ladies’ Stableford competition last Sunday, Noreen Reddington was the winner with a score of 21pts. Anne Corcoran came home in second place one point further back. Margaret Madigan was in third place and Nuala Walsh fourth. The gents’ Stableford was won by Ciaran McGettigan on 41pts, Kevin Hastings took second place and Peter Flynn third. The final placing went to John F O’Malley in fourth place.
