Man blocked traffic after he drove wrong way down street

A man blocked traffic in Ballina after he drove his car down a one way street while allegedly drunk, Ballina District Court heard on Tuesday.

On the night of September 29 2010, Garda Eanna Cuffe observed traffic congestion on Hill Street, Ballina. A car belonging to Stephen Carrabine, 1 Shanaghy Heights, Ballina, was facing the incorrect way down the street. The defendant was outside the car and Garda Cuffe observed that the defendant was unsteady on his feet. A roadside breath test was conducted, which Carrabine failed, and he was arrested at 11.44pm.

At the garda station a breath sample was provided which showed a concentration of 81mg of alcohol per 100ml of breath.

Legal argument was made in relation to the drink driving charge by solicitor John Gordon, and Judge Mary Devins adjourned the case to March 8. As the defendant was not in the court Judge Devins issued a bench warrant not to issue before March 8.
