Intriguing play to be staged in Westport

St Patrick’s drama group are busy rehearsing Lennox Robinson's gem of a comedy Drama at Inish, which was first staged by the Abbey Theatre in 1933.

The play centres around the events of July 1930 when hotel proprietor John Twohig fancies some “highbrow” entertainment for the summer season. Enter the flamboyant De La Mare Repertory Company with their dark dramas of Checkov, Ibsen, and the like. The plays are a huge success at first and a powerful influence. In a series of bizarre incidents, the drama on stage comes to life offstage. Within days of the actors' arrival, the sleepy seaside town becomes a hotbed of crime, misdemeanour, and scandal.

With romance, comedy, drama and intrigue, Drama at Inish is the perfect antidote to the recession blues. It will be staged at Scoil Phadraig, Altamount Street, for a five night run from Tuesday January 18 to Saturday January 22.

The cast members are Liam McNamara, Liz Browne, Bronach Joyce, Paul Dunning, Rosaleen Heraty, Seamus McNally, Andrew Pelham Burn, Bernie Byrne, Ruth Gilroy, John Gavin, Tia Crowley, Lennie Grimes. The play is directed by Mary Carr and produced by Regina McCormack. Booking at 086 860 9981.
