Achill protester released on bail

A 41-year-old man originally from Achill, who was dubbed the ‘Anglo Avenger’ following a protest outside Leinster House in September, was arrested on Tuesday — Budget Day — after he staged another protest.

Joe McNamara, who resides at Dun na Carraige, Blackrock, in Galway, was charged with dangerous driving after a small cherry-picker, which was covered in anti-Government slogans, was parked outside the gates of Leinster House on Tuesday morning. For about an hour McNamara raised the crane into the air and played Lady Gaga's ‘Poker Face’ and the theme tune from The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly, before the crane was lowered down at around 8.45am.

McNamara was held in custody for breach of his bail conditions for a criminal damage charge in September, when he drove a cement truck to the gates of Leinster House. However, an order for the release on bail of the defendant was made at the High Court later on Tuesday evening.
