Newport is becoming the Venice of the west

Labour General Election candidate for Mayo Dr Jerry Cowley has called on Mayo County Council to take immediate action to address the recurring problem of flooding in Newport and to improve the footpath access and lighting in the Oak Park Estate.

“It seems that Newport might as well be in Co Tipperary, or in Timbuktu, because it seems that Mayo County Council have forgotten that it exists,” Dr Cowley said. “How else could one explain why the basic engineering solution of a wider pipe over a few yards, necessary to remedy the flooding problem in Newport, is apparently still beyond the capability of Áras an Chontae?

“The residents of the area not only have to put up with being marooned in their houses every time it rains heavily, but in the adjoining Oak Park Estate they have difficulty getting into and out of their houses due to primitive access pathways crying out for repair,” he added. “At night they must also stumble in the dark due to inadequate and non-functioning street lighting. This is particularly hard on older people and is a hazard for children.

“The answer to Newport’s problems is not rocket science and is deserving of Mayo County Council’s immediate attention”.
