The Moynihans bring some trad magic to Castlebar

Two of Ireland’s finest traditional musicians, Uilleann piper Diarmaid and guitarist Donncha Moynihan, perform at the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar on Thursday 11th November at 8pm. Diarmaid and Donncha Moynihan first teamed up in 1996 as Calico, a traditional band that released two award-winning albums, Celanova Square and Songdogs. The band was one of the most influential ensembles to come out of Ireland, touring widely in Europe and the USA. Their latest album, The Lights of Ranzanico, is a collection of beautiful original tunes fused with Irish and European melodies, and once again demonstrates both creative vision and an extraordinary lyrical approach to music, and was RTÉ Lyric FM’s Album of the Month for May. Performing with them will be top drawer guest musicians Christy Leahy (accordion ) and Donal Siggins (bouzouki ).

Mayo in the thirties takes centre stage

The everyday life of the village of Kilkelly in the 1930s takes centre stage in a unique and fascinating film documentary that will be screened at the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar on Monday November 15 at 6.30pm and 8.30pm.

The Irish Film Institute/IFI National is proud to present a special screening of The Seasons with live music from members of Kíla and harpist Cormac de Barra. The Seasons is an intimate diary of life in the little village of Kilkelly, Co Mayo, in 1935.

Made by amateur filmmaker Dr John Benignus Lyons, it charts the social and agricultural life of the village over the course of a year. Meticulously shot in black and white and colour, The Seasons is a technically adept and remarkably thorough anthropological study of a small village in days gone by. The film covers everything from ploughing, sowing, and footing of turf to school, handball games, Patron’s Day Fair, the annual harvest, and the blanket of snow at the year’s end. This very special screening, which brings the film back to the county from where it came, will have live musical accompaniment from harpist Cormac de Barra. Cormac will be joined by Colm and Rossa Ó Snódaigh from Kila to create a magical soundscape that will breathe life back into the village of Kilkelly back in the thirties.
