Lots of action around the clubs over the winter

Balla

Last weekend’s Stableford competition held in Balla sponsored by The Sheebeen golf society was won by Tom Jennings with a score of 41. Martin O’Boyle came second with a score of 39, while Vinnie Gibbons came third with 37. In the ladies’ competition Margaret Ralph scored 40 to claim first prize with Marie Flanagan and Elaine O’Hara finishing on 37. Flanagan took second place thanks to her better scoring on the back nine. Bob Leggett and Aodan MacSuibhne won the Borderick Cup, with Kathleen and Stephen Minogue coming home in second place. The Senior Scratch Cup was won by Padraig Martin after he beat Joe Monaghan in the final. John Parsons claimed the Junior Scratch Cup after beating Gus Heraty in the final. The presentation of prizes for the recent competition winners will take place in the Sheebeen on Friday next, November 12, at 9.30pm.

Ballina

The recent Connacht Scaffolding sponsored 15 hole Stableford competition was won by John Irwin with a score of 38pts, he just held off the challenge of John Doherty who finished in second place with a score off 36pts, and Michael O’Malley came third on 35pts. The winter league swung into action last weekend with the team of Michael Brady, PJ Ruddy, John Durcan, and Des Farrell winning the first round with a score of 47.2 nett. The second round will be played this Sunday and once again the competition will be a shotgun start. Draw for tee times is on the main notice board.

Ballyhaunis

In last weekend’s club competition Anne Freeley, playing off 13, was the winner of the ladies’ competition with a score of 35pts. In the gents’ section Tom Fanning jr was the winner with a score of 41 pts, with Robbie Hughes coming second and Brian Phillips third. The gross prize was claimed by Seamus Lundon with a score of 30pts.

Claremorris

Last weekend’s competition was won by JP Hughes with a score of 43pts. The Cat 1 prize went to Tom Fanning jr, with Eoin McEvoy taking the Cat 2, and Robert O’Connor the Cat 3 win. In the ladies’ competition Kung Fanning, with a score of 39pts, came home in first place. The club will hold a prize presentation and the captains and president’s farewell on Saturday November 13, with the AGM taking place on November 26.

Westport

The success of the winter league goes from strength to strength. This year’s competition begins next weekend. As ever the weekly results and league table will have a dedicated page on the club website, where the weekend scores will be online every Monday morning. Competitors should be aware of the competition rules and format through the event notice, posted in the gents’ locker room. The next senior gents’ competition is scheduled to take place Thursday November 25, where refreshments and a drink will be provided.
