Ballina

In last weekend’s Gerry Kenny Sports sponsored stableford competition Sammy Gavin was the winner, scoring 43pts over his 18 holes. He finished three points ahead of Des Sweeney, back in second place on 40pts, with Cian Burke third on 39pts.

All those interested in participating in the winter league should submit their names before Sunday next, October 24. A sheet will also be posted on the notice board this week for those who wish to put their names down as subs for the league. Once again the start date for the competition is Sunday October 31 with the remaining rounds taking place on November 7, 14 and 21.

Ballyhaunis

In the club stableford competition last weekend Anne Freeley was the winner of the ladies section with a score of 35pts. She finished just one point ahead of second placed Marge Hierons who came home on 34pts. In the gents section Seamus Swift was the winner with 42pts, he finished three points ahead of Martin Keane in second with Sean Sloan in third.

Claremorris

In Claremorris last weekend it was the McHugh Costcutters Ballindine sponsored day, the big prize in the gents section was claimed by Tony Todd who finished up on a score of 43pts. The Catt 1 prize was taken by James Prendergast who finished on 35pts, the Catt 2 win went to Pat Coyne with Padraig Higgins taking the Cat 3 section win. In the ladies section Christina Rush won out on a score of 36pts. Kung Fanning finished the day in second place two points further back.

Westport

Mick Moran was a popular winner of the high handicap major, the Phillip’s Cup in Carrowholly recently. In a closely fought final he had a three and two victory over Michael Flynn. The GAA referee has a reputation of being a steady player and many members will be surprised to learn that this is his first “major” win.

Mick will now have an important wait, as handicap secretary David Scott makes his end of season handicap cuts over the coming days, just prior to the Winter League, based on general play, club matchplay achievements, and Am-Am performances during the season.

David himself captained his fourball team to overall second place in the gents’ committee outing on Saturday last. His team finished at five under over the 14 holes, in glorious weather conditions. However, it was the outgoing Captain John Collins’ team who took the plaudits at the end of play. On the penultimate hole Tom Walsh, rolled in a 10 footer to give his side the momentum to finish the 14 holes at six under.

A second registration day for winter coaching for junior boys and girls will take place tomorrow, Saturday, between 10am and 12pm, at Westport Golf Club. This very popular format is supervised by resident PGA professionals Alex Mealia and Todd O’Reilly.

A special mention for Perry O’Reilly and Liam Gibbons, who both featured in last weekend’s gents’ competition. This season saw the 30th anniversary of Westport’s only gents’ National title, the Junior Cup back in 1980; both Perry and Liam were members of that team.
