Newport man is being a busy bee

A man from Newport had been a busy bee in helping to get 200,000 bees back into Ireland; in a joint initiative between Innocent smoothies and the Federation of Irish Beekeepers.

Ciarán Cuffe, TD Minister for State with special responsibility for Sustainable Transport, Horticulture, Planning, and Heritage presented Tim Stevens, Newport; Tracy Healy, Rush, Co Dublin; and Phelan McQuaid, Glaslough, Co Monaghan with the beekeeping equipment and hives to get them started.

“We are delighted to partner with Innocent on this project to introduce 200,000 bees back into Ireland,” said Philip McCabe of the Federation of Irish Beekeepers. “Our native black honeybee is in serious decline due to parasites, weather, and the destruction of our countryside. We beekeepers are determined to protect one of the greatest pollinators which is so necessary for the survival of us all. I call on the people of Ireland to plant seeds suitable for our honeybees to survive and thrive.”
