Schools in Mayo to lose out as budgets slashed

Fine Gael deputy John O’Mahony has hit out at the slashing of school budgets by a massive €2 billion in the Capital Expenditure Programme, saying this will have a devastating effect on Mayo schools and children.

“Once again, Fianna Fáil and the Greens are targeting the most vulnerable and it is the children in Mayo who will feel the pain of this massive cutback,” the deputy said.

“The Revised Capital Expenditure Programme, launched to much fanfare by the Government this week, has actually slashed schools’ budgets by 40 per cent when compared to the National Development Plan,” Dep O’Mahony said. “To add insult to injury, the Government has attempted to hide this cut. But there is no way that schools across the country, and especially in Mayo, will ignore a 40 per cent cut in promised funds.”
