Councillors propose planning of games area for Belmullet

Belmullet Electoral Area councillors have proposed the development of a multi-use gaming area which will be located next to the Civic Offices in the town.

During the meeting which was held on Tuesday, councillors welcomed the refurbishment of the existing tennis court and the provision of a multi use area which will allow for any rebound sport to be played. The centre court will be changed to a teenage congregation area and a tennis court will also be retained. Wheelchair users will also be accommodated in the new games space. Mayo County Council will maintain and manage the area under strict regulations and CCTV will be installed.

Cllr Rose Conway-Walsh highlighted the need for fencing to be erected immediately at the back of the civic centre due to anti-social behaviour taking place in the area where homes at the back of the centre are being accessed by youths and residents are being “pelted with cans”. The councillor was informed that part of the development includes fencing in certain areas.

The new chair of the committee Cllr Gerry Coyle said that hopefully this game area will allow teenagers to engage in other activities rather than beer cans.

The planning of this development will go before the main county council meeting on Monday.
