Gosford Park continues matinee series

As part of an ongoing initiative, the Linenhall is presenting a series of monthly Matinee films at 3pm on Tuesday afternoons, with a series of classics old and new for absolutely everyone. The first of these, on Tuesday October 14 at 3pm is legendary director Robert Altman’s Oscar-winning Gosford Park (PG15 ). Set in 1932, a phalanx of moneyed guests arrives for a weekend shooting party. While the masters engage in various financial and sexual intrigues upstairs, the world downstairs has its own curiosities. Altman delivers a fascinating, blackly comic look at the treacherous yet poignant gamesmanship between the classes. A stellar British ensemble cast includes Michael Gambon, Kristin Scott Thomas, Maggie Smith, Emily Watson and Eileen Atkins. What better way to pass a damp Tuesday afternoon?

Tony Takitani next up for film club

The next screening at Linenhall Film Club is the stunning minimal Japanese movie Tony Takitani, an eloquent, deftly told tale based on a short story by best-selling Japanese author Haruki Murakami. The eponymous ‘hero’ is an undemanding mechanical draftsman who lives a lonely existence. But when Tony meets the young and beautiful Eiko, he falls for her instantly, despite their 15-year age difference. Life hovers on the brink of fulfilment, but unforeseen tragedy forces Tony to look at his life in a whole different way. All in all, a quiet, beguiling gem of a movie.

This is a wonderful opportunity to see the latest collection of works in Deirdre’s oeuvre.
