Control of River Moy harbour transferred to Mayo County Council

The responsibility for the control and operation of the River Moy harbour in Ballina has been formally transferred from the harbour authority to Mayo County Council, announced Fianna Fáil TD Dara Calleary.

The transfer of power to the county council is in keeping with Government policy for non-commercial regional ports.

Deputy Calleary has paid tribute to the harbour commissioners who have put so much effort into the harbour over the years.

“I am hopeful that now, given the sufficient resources and time, Mayo County Council will work to develop the harbour into a marina as well as incorporating a community facility for the quay area. I will be working with Cllr Willie Nolan in that regard and this will be a considerable boost to the quay area and the town as a whole.

“The Department has previously provided funding for safety and remedial works at the harbour and I will work with the council to ensure that this work is completed as soon as possible,” concluded Dep Calleary.
