Jail for drunk driver

A 21-year-old man, with 14 previous convictions, was convicted of drink driving and sentenced to three months in prison.

Ballina District Court heard on Tuesday, that on November 15 2009 at 2am, Thomas Conroy, 64 St Patrick’s Estate, Ballina, was arrested for drink driving. A breath sample provided showed 70mg of alcohol per 100ml of breath. Conroy had no insurance or driving licence and the court heard on Tuesday that the defendant has a driving disqualification.

John Gordon, solicitor, said the unemployed man, who is dealing with a drink problem, drove his cousin’s car that night as he went to get cigarettes.

Judge Mary Devins said that he has to face the consequences and for drink driving he was convicted and fined €1,000, disqualified for four years, and sentenced to two months in prison. For not having any insurance the defendant was convicted and fined €600, disqualified for one year concurrent, and sentenced to one month in prison consecutive. Recognisances were fixed.
