Judge had to dash for chambers when approached by defendant during recess

Judge Mary Devins told a sitting of Castlebar District Court on Wednesday that “she thought she could walk around Castlebar without fearing for her safety”. However, that belief was challenged this week when the judge was approached outside the court house by a defendant.

According to Judge Devins she had to make a “dash for the chambers” during her lunch break after the defendant approached her, an incident which never happened before.

When the defendant in question appeared before the judge she adjourned the case so it could be heard before another judge.
