Cawley Cup final spots up for grabs

Rugby

The domestic rugby season is racing to its conclusion for another year and three Mayo sides are still in with a chance of glory in the Cawley Cup this weekend. Castlebar, Westport, and Ballina all made their way into the last four last weekend, setting up a local derby in one semi-final, with Westport hosting Castlebar in Carrowholly and Ballina making their way north to take on Sligo.

In the quarter finals Westport saw off border side Corrib by 10-7 with Kevin Corcoran touching down for the Bulls. Ballina did enough to hold off Tuam in Heffernan Park to record an 8-3 win, while Castlebar had more than enough to see off Dunmore on a score of 35-3. Sligo who will go into the last four as favourites to lift the title were easy winners over Portumna by a score of 40-12. The winners of Sunday’s semi-finals will have a long wait until May 17 to get to grips with each other in the final. Both semi-finals kick off at 3pm.
