Take away worker assaulted

A case involving a man who assaulted a take-away employee on New Year’s Eve in Castlebar was heard at this week’s sitting of Castlebar District Court.

Ahmed Alkatib outlined that on New Year’s Eve around 1.45am he was assaulted by Martin McDonagh, 12 Lawn Park, Castlebar, in Top Nosh, Castlebar.

Mr Alkatib said that he observed the defendant shouting and fighting outside the take-away before the take-away worker wished McDonagh a Happy New Year and told him to calm down before he came inside.

The defendant entered the take-away with another man and the pair pushed and shouted at customers, and Mr Alkatib was called names and struck in the face.

Gardaí were called to the scene and Garda Brian McGuire outlined to the court that the defendant was intoxicated, was shouting and roaring abuse, and failed to calm down. He was observed by the garda to push people on the street and tell by-passers and Garda McGuire to “f**k off”.

The defendant, who was not in court nor represented, has one previous public order conviction.

Judge Mary Devins issued a bench warrant for McDonagh’s arrest for the purpose of sentencing.
