Mayo come through Orchard challenge

GAA: National Hurling League

Mayo 0-19

Armagh 0-17

Brian Moran was the man of the match for Mayo in Crossmaglen on Saturday afternoon, he contributed 10 points of Mayo’s total of 19 as they did just enough to hold off the home side to take their first points of the National Hurling League for 2010. Moran was one of four changes from the side which was beaten by Kerry the pervious weekend, landed each of his 10 points from dead balls. Mayo raced into an early seven point lead after 15 minutes, but were pegged back to a two point lead on a scoreline of 0-11 to 0-9 at the break.

Dual star Keith Higgins was introduced after the break as Mayo manager Martin Brennan did all he could to ensure his side kept their league campaign on track. Higgins contributed a point for play, while Derek McConn knocked over four points and Eoin Maddigan chipped in with two as Mayo held out for the win. Armagh did have them under a lot of pressure in the first half as they hit 18 wides and missed a penalty, but that will have been of little concern to Mayo as they made the long trip home with two hard fought points in the bag.
