Poetry to help combat racism

Mayo Immigrants’ Forum is organising the annual intercultural poetry competition which is now open to all national schools in Mayo. The theme this year is All Different All The Same.

The competition is open to third to sixth class pupils. The aim of the competition is to entice pupils to write a poem with an intercultural / anti-racism theme. This will effectively enable pupils to develop their creative skills whilst promoting an awareness of cultural diversity among national school pupils. Closing date for entries is Friday October 17 at 5pm.

Twenty-five finalists will be invited to attend and recite their poems at an awards ceremony which will take place on Thursday November 27 at 5pm in Castlebar. Awards will be allocated on a first, second and third place basis with the remaining finalists receiving highly recommended awards. A publication will also be published which will contain a selection of 50 poems.

In conjunction with this competition Mayo Education Centre is organising workshops throughout the county for teachers entitled The Power of Poetry to Paint the Rainbow.
