Man in his forties dies in Ballyvary house fire

The body of a 43-year-old milk delivery man was discovered in his home in Currane, near Ballyvary, after midnight on Tuesday following a fire at the house.

Neighbours raised the alarm following the discovery of the blaze and firemen attended the scene. However it is believed that Kieran Mullaney, originally from Boleyard, Shraheens, Balla, died from smoke inhalation.

Mr Mullaney’s body was taken to Mayo General Hospital in Castlebar for a post-mortem examination and the scene was preserved as a Garda technical team carried out investigations. It is believed that the fire was started accidentally.

Fine Gael councillor from the Ballyvarry area, Henry Kenny, said that death of Mr Mullaney, who comes from a large, well-known, family in the area, “is a terrible tragedy at the beginning of a new year,” and Cllr Kenny offered his sympathy to the Mullaney family.

The funeral of Mr Mullaney took place on Thursday where he was laid to rest in St Joseph’s Cemetery, Bohola. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.
