Home internationals a huge success in Westport

Ballyhaunis

Last weekend’s Stableford competition saw Connor Freeley score a 44 off 15. The ladies’ section was won by Laura Freeley who scored 40 off 13, with Kay Fanning finishing in second place with a score of 37 off 19. The men’s competition was won by John Burke who scored a 42 off 8, Emmett Keane came second with a 41. Third place went to Willie Coyne with a score of 40 off 20.

Balla

Last weekend’s Stableford competition saw Danny Burke with his score of 38 winning out in the men’s section. Alan Jennings came second with a 37 (back nine ), the same score as third placed Noel Hoben. The ladies’ competition was won by Elaine O’Hora who scored 39 for her 18 holes, Geraldine Kilgallon hit a 37, and Breege Moran came third with a 34. Next week’s competition is strokeplay, sponsored by The Sheebeen, Balla. Winners in this competition will gain points in the penultimate Golfer of the Year competition.

Claremorris

The Robert Blacoe sponsored open day was won by Alan Ferrick with a score of 42pts, with Joey McDonnell winning the Cat 1 competition on 40pts. Greg Peters won the Cat 2 on 39pts, and Pat Burke won the Cat 3 section on 40pts. The ladies’ competition was won by Christina Rush who hit 39pts. Claire Naughton came second with a score of 38pts, and Dypmna Clarke came third on a score of 36pts.

Westport

The club scratch cup last weekend saw Robbie Flynn the big winner finishing up with a 78 (back nine ). Ronan Mahon came second, also with a 78 ,and Brian Ainsworth from Castlebar won the nett prize with a 73 nett score. The men’s four ball rumble competition was won by the team of Tony Joyce, Alan Myburgh, John Gerard Moran, and Joe Higgins with 95pts. Second place went to Michael Conway, Eugene Lavelle, Eugene Patten, and Eddie Groden with a score of 91 pts.

Ireland retained the Home Internationals Championship on Friday last. The standard of golf over the three days was exceptional and it was an eye opener to see how long these “seniors” could hit the ball especially on the par 5, 10th and par 4, 13th.

The first round of the Winter League is scheduled to take place on Sunday November 8. Details about the format of this year’s competition will appear in next week’s notes. Also the leader board for both the ladies and gents competition will be prominent on the club web-site. Next Sunday’s competition will be a fourball betterball competition.
