At Castlebar District Court this week a 25-year-old father of one was convicted of drink driving after he left a poker game to rush to his pregnant girlfriend’s assistance.
Inspector Martin Byrne outlined that on March 8 this year Sean Walsh, 27 the Fairways, Westport, was pursued by Garda Hazel Carney after he drove through a speed check in an unsteady and dangerous manner.
After being arrested on suspicion of drink driving a breath sample showed a concentration of 56mg of alcohol per 100ml of breath.
Defending solicitor Lynda Lenehan said that Walsh had consumed three cans of cider before he received a text from his girlfriend, who had pregnancy pains, and then rushed to be with her.
The defendant, who is employed as a barman and has no previous convictions, was convicted and fined €600 by Judge Mary Devins and disqualified from driving for two years
