Eden, takes to the stage

New Mayo-based theatre company Rain, Rocks and Reeks presents the compelling drama Eden at the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar on Monday September 14 at 8pm.

Eden depicts a dysfunctional marriage, a couple living the archetypal Irish lives of quiet desperation in a small pre-Celtic Tiger provincial town. Billy clings to booze, and fantasies about a younger woman, while Breda clings onto an inkling of optimism, believing that their big night out will rekindle the spark that once was there. But will it? Eden is an award-winning play by Eugene O Brien (writer of RTÉ’S Pure Mule, now enjoying its second season ), a two-hander first produced at The Peacock and The Abbey, and more recently turned into an award-winning film. This production by Mayo’s newest professional theatre company features actors Hazel McLynn and Paul Mekatarian, and enjoyed a sell-out pilot tour in spring 2009.

Angie Grimes exhibition opening next week

Opening next Friday September 4 at the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar is Coast, an evocative exhibition of oil paintings by Angie Grimes that is inspired by Ireland’s coastline.

Drawn from locations in Kerry, Mayo, Donegal, and North Co. Dublin, according to the Co. Dublin artist, “The work is executed in thick impasto and depicts, I hope, the glorious wonders of the ever-changing vista of our coast and shore”. Having grown up in the seaside town of Skerries, Angie’s paintings express both personal and cultural histories, and also “an internal vision”.

“I have a deep affinity for the elemental power of water and the mysterious forces of nature,” she continued. “My paintings evolve through a process of rich layers of pigment, the rhythms of application creating depths and swells. Colour is used to heighten and expand the work’s emotional range, drawn from the lyrical and emotive narrative in my art. These images are rooted in the environment and aim not only to inspire the senses but also to communicate the inherent visual properties of the paint itself.” Grimes’ lyrical and expressive work has gained critical acclaim. In The Irish Times Aidan Dunne has described her “impassioned engagement” and “fast, flowing compositions” that are “vibrant and sparkling.” This is her eighth solo show.

Coast will be official opened by Michelle Mulherin, Leas Cathaoirleach Mayo County Council, on Friday September 4 at 7.30pm, when there will be a chance to preview the work, meet the artist and enjoy a complimentary glass of wine. All welcome. The exhibition runs until Saturday September 26.
