Westport

The gents fourball scramble was won by the team of Tommie Lyons, Redmond Lyons, Michael Reddington, and Joe Kelly with a score of 56.6 nett. Second place went to Tony Bree, Thomas McLoughlin, Alan Browne, and Anthony Browne who finished off with a score of 60.60 nett, and third place to Noel O’Malley, Eugene Lavelle, Peter Nally, and JF O’Malley who finished on 61.4 nett.

Jim Browne, junior co-ordinator, had a good day at the office on Sunday last. Facing a difficult zone semi-final against Ballinrobe in the Fred Daly Plate, team selection would prove to be the key. With four matches away, Browne secured two victories in Cloonacastle with victories for Matthew Golden and Ian Walsh. Funny how both players had similar preparations, competing in the gents 9 hole competition hosted by Mary McNicholas in her Captain’s Prize on Saturday afternoon. For the record Walsh won on the back 3 over Golden. Saturday August 1 sees the opening day of Westport Golf Club Open Week. There are daily competitions for ladies and gents.

Last weekend saw the ladies’ captain’s prize take place with Maureen Keane winning, Tara Fahy came second and Maeve O’Farrell took third place. The gross prize was won by Mary McDermott, with the rest of the places being made up by Olga Loughrey, Connie Coakley, and Pat Kelly.

The Cat 1 competition was won by Ann Corcoran, with Ann Maybury taking the Cat 2 prize and Gretta Murphy the Cat 3 win. Maureen Flynn won the past captains’ prize, with Theresa Walsh taking the back nine win and Nora Heraty the front nine prize.
