Mixed fortunes for Westport as Ballina stay top

At the time of writing last week, Ballina Town had nudged ahead of Westport United at the top of the Super League on goal difference but the Covies had a game in hand to be played that evening against Snugboro United. Westport’s shock loss at the hands of Ballyheane the previous week would have been seen by many to have been a minor blip in their season, but the Conway Park side had different ideas. Kevin Curry was the man of the day banging in a hat trick inside an hour to set his side off to a 5-1 win. Curry opened the scoring on 24 minutes but Westport were able to draw the game level thanks to a Gerry McLouglinn goal before half time, but it was all Snugboro in the second half with Curry sticking in two more goals and both Johnny Griffin and Paul Walsh sealing the win with goals of their own. Both sides saw men see the line, with Westport ending up with nine men after Dessie O’Malley and David Hoban getting the line, along with Stevie Gavin for the home side.

Snugboro United followed up their win by picking up another three points with a 4-2 win away to Manulla on Saturday night. Goals from Mark McGreal, Kevin Curry, Jonathan Maloney, and Joel Caprini were enough to see off the home side who replied with late goals from Roger Clarke and Mícheál Jennings. The win will have the ‘Boro in good stead ahead of their upcoming Westaro Cup final against Ballina Town on Saturday night.

The league leaders were able to shake off the setback of going a goal down to Fahy Rovers early on in their game last weekend away to Fahy Rovers to take the points and keep themselves on top of the table ahead of Westport United on goal difference. Michael Goggins opened the scoring for Fahy, but Brendan Lavelle had the game all square early on and before half time Shane Quinn had the north Mayo men in front for the first time. The game was sealed with a Philip Devers goal seven minutes before time to leave Ballina still on top of the table. The clash between two of the form sides in the Westaro Cup final on Saturday evening is one that should be a game to be savoured, the action gets under way in Milebush at 6pm. Westport were able to shake off their two defeats in a row to see off Iorras Aontaithe by 3-0 in Carne Nash on Saturday night with Dave Cameron grabbing a brace and the other strike coming from Gerry McLoughlin to ensure that the Covies didn’t lose three on the bounce in the space of seven days. The other action in the Super League last weekend saw Kilmore pick up their first win of the year when they saw off Straide and Foxford United 1-0 at home with Daniel Keane grabbing the goal for the north Mayo men.
