Westport festival of sport set to be a great success

Preparations are well under way for the Westport Festival of Sport fun day, which is to be held in conjunction with the Gaelforce adventure race weekend Sunday August 23 on the South Mall, Westport. The event, co-ordinated by the Mayo Sports Partnership, promises to be full of fun activities such as the family sports challenge (incorporating 12 different sports ), water sports, demonstrations, bouncy castle/fun inflatables, walking challenges, street orienteering, inclusive games, and the fourth annual Mayo Team Challenge.

Speaking about the event newly elected Cathaoirleach of Westport Councillor Myles Staunton stated: “The day aims to showcase Westport as an active town providing opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to participate in a fun and cost free event.

“Many local sporting organisations including GAA, soccer, rugby, golf, tennis, camogie, boxing, road bowling, water sports including canoeing, sailing, etc, are coming together to provide a come and try it challenge to all. All sports organisations deserve to be commended for their great community work and I would appeal to all local clubs to become involved on the day.”

It is hoped that some well known sports personalities from the soccer, GAA, and rugby worlds will be in attendance to try out some of the challenges. Many organisations including Westport Town Council, Westport Chamber of Commerce, An Garda Siochana, Mayo VEC, GMIT, Mayo Water Safety Committee, Family Resource Centre, and local sports organisations are pooling resources in an effort to make this day a success.

“We want to make this event sustainable. However every event has costs associated with it. If people are willing to volunteer, have their name linked to the event through sponsorship or simply donate an item through benefit in kind it would be greatly appreciated. With six weeks to go to the Gaelforce West weekend it promises to be a weekend of sport for all. So pencil in Sunday afternoon 1pm – 5pm August 23 on the South Mall, Westport, for an unforgettable experience.
