Drink driving conviction for man driving home from local pub

A 45-year-old married father of two, was convicted and fined €500 and disqualified from driving for two years at Belmullet District Court this week for drink driving.

On January 10 2009 at 1.35am, Garda Michael Mullaney stopped the vehicle of Sean Doherty, Stonefield, Carrowteige, Ballina, after he observed the car pull out from a junction and then reverse back. Doherty failed a roadside breath test with a subsequent breath test at the Garda station showing a reading of 62mg of alcohol per 100ml of breath.

Doherty told the court that he was in the local pub, which was open until after hours before he was stopped and had a few drinks.

The farmer was convicted, fined, and disqualified by Judge Denis McLoughlin.
