€53m for five Mayo Roads Projects

€53m has been allocated to National Road projects in Mayo.

The funding will see the allocation of €39m towards the progression of the N5 Westport to Turlough project. The total cost of the project is €241m.

A further €12m has been allocated for the progression of the N5 Ballaghaderreen to Scramoge project, which will now proceed to tender stage, which has an overall cost of €200m.

The funding has been allocated to Mayo County Council through Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII ) for national roads and greenways.

It also sees €250,000 allocated to the N58 Foxford by-pass to further progress this project while €300,000 has been allocated for the Westport to Mulranny road project for outstanding committed land payments.

A total of €400,000 has been granted towards upgrade works on the N17 Knock to Collooney road.

Welcoming the news, Mayo TD Deputy Alan Dillon said: “This year, priority is being given to the ongoing progression of local by-passes around some of the country’s best known market towns including Foxford in Mayo. This is in line with the Government’s Towns First policy, facilitating more people-friendly development and ensuring that the towns can thrive and develop without 24/7 car congestion. This project will progress rapidly.”

Deputy Michael Ring also welcomed the funding, and particularly the new bypass planned for Foxford, which, he said, is at 'an early stage of development'.
