Achill Island Coast Guard were involved in a rescue of a dog who got into a spot of bother last weekend on Saturday.

Their search and rescue team were tasked with rescuing Barry, whose lead snapped and he fell, while his owners were hiking close to Croaghaun Cliffs north of Corrymore on the island.

Two hours after they got the call, the rescue team had Barry back with his grateful owners - the dog was uninjured but a little shook, according to the rescue team.

The team offered the following advice for anyone who finds themselves in a similar situation: "It’s not uncommon for animals to end up on the wrong side of a cliff face and should this happen, never attempt a rescue yourself. Stay safe by dialling 112/999 and ask for the Coast Guard."
