Super League title race enters final furlong

Soccer: Mayo League

The home stretch for the Elverys Sports Super League season will come into sight this weekend when the league resumes action after a week's break.

Defending champions and league leaders Ballyheane will be looking to stretch out their lead at the top of the table when they take on second placed Ballina Town on Sunday afternoon in Belleek. Ballyheane are six points ahead of the north Mayo men at the moment, a win will push them nine points in front of their opponents - but if the home side can pick up a win, there will be just three points between the teams with four games left to go down the straight.

Westport United will be hoping that Ballina Town can pick up a win too, they are currently just a point behind second placed Ballina Town and if they can pick up a win over Manulla on Sunday morning it will put them right back into the title race heading into the last four rounds of action.

The battle to avoid the drop is also heating right up with the bottom four sides separated by just four points heading into this weekend's round of games. Ballyhaunis Town are currently sitting at the bottom of the table with nine points, just one point ahead of them on ten points each are Claremorris and Glenhest Rovers with Straide and Foxford United on 12 points in seventh place in the standings.

The meeting of Straide and Foxford United and Claremorris in Green Road on Saturday evening will be a key game for both sides as they look to pull themselves out of relegation trouble. The hosts were beaten narrowly 3-2 by Westport United in their last outing, while Claremorris shared the spoils with Ballyhaunis Town.

The east Mayo men will be at home to Kiltimagh-Knock united on Sunday morning and will be hoping to pick up at least a point to keep their survival hopes alive, while Glenhest Rovers will be on the road on Saturday evening taking on Castlebar Celtic Park.

Crossmolina push to within a point of Premier League leaders

In the only junior league game that took place last weekend, Crossmolina pushed themselves a step closer to promotion and within a point of league leaders Conn Rangers. Last weekend Crossmolina were 3-1 winners on the road against Moy Villa in Attymass to push themselves three points clear of Villa and within a point of Rangers with a game in hand. Kevin Campbell got the first goal of the day for Crossmolina, before John Durkan levelled it up from the penalty spot. Michael Gill put Crossmolina back in front before David O'Boyle wrapped up the points from a long-range free.

Crossmolina will be looking to keep up their winning ways when they take on Swinford on Sunday morning. The league leaders Conn Rangers will be hoping to keep their noses in front at the top of the table when they face a tricky assignment at home to Fahy Rovers on Sunday afternoon. Moy Villa will be hoping that neither of those sides ahead of them get too far in front of them in the race as they have the weekend off. The other games in the division will see bottom-of-the -able Killala host fourth placed Westport United B, while Kilitimagh-Knock United B will host Ballyglass in another game that could have serious ramifications at the bottom of the table.
