Lorry driver disqualified for driving the wrong way up one-way street

A lorry driver who drove the wrong way on a one way system, instead of taking the diverted road out of Ballina, was disqualified from driving for one year and convicted and fined by Judge Mary Devins at Ballina District Court this week.

On December 4 2008 at 10.40pm, Garda Pat McCann observed the lorry forcing a car to drive up onto the footpath so that the lorry could get by, even though the right hand lane of the Sligo road was closed.

Garda McCann spoke with the driver, Shaun Gallagher, Drunnahoagh, Letterkenny, who said that he did not follow the diversions in place as he thought that he might get lost.

The defendant, who was not in court or represented, was convicted and fined €500 and disqualified from driving.
