Part-time BA in personnel management at GMIT Castlebar

As part of its ongoing commitment to lifelong learning, GMIT Castlebar is offering a part-time BA in personnel management, commencing in September.

The three-year programme is designed to prepare professionals for people management positions in both the public and private sectors and is also attractive to those who are active within the trade union movement. Applications for the programme are expected to come from people who are already working within the personnel sector and those who aspire to careers in the area.

Classes are delivered on Mondays from 6pm to 10pm and Fridays from 2pm to 8pm over three academic years.

Head of the GMIT Castlebar Lifelong Learning Centre, Dr Deirdre Garvey, says the programme is very popular with people already in full and/or part-time employment due to its part-time delivery.

“This professional degree provides a high level of knowledge of current management techniques required in all types of organisations. Ultimately, the programme is intended to enhance the competitive advantage of students and their employers in today's increasingly global market,” said Dr Garvey.

Personnel management focuses on the management of employees including recruitment and hiring of personnel, payroll, organisation and administration of benefits, layoffs and severance packages, and numerous other personnel challenges and issues. The delivery of these vital services requires an in-depth knowledge of laws and regulations as well as a thorough understanding of an organisation’s goals and culture.
