Parents concerned about speed limits outside schools

Concerned parents of school children have contacted Castlebar Town Council and Mayo County Council election candidate Councillor Blackie Gavin to voice their concerns about the danger of speeding cars outside national schools in Mayo.

“The parents are concerned because there are no speed restrictions or speed limits at a number of national schools and they want this matter highlighted. They fear for the safety of the children and they want the matter addressed urgently,” Cllr Gavin stated this week.

While funding was secured to install flashing amber lights at a number of national schools in Mayo, some schools on dangerous and narrow roads are still left with no warning signs.

“I believe that the speed limit outside every national school in Mayo should be the same and therefore everyone will be aware of the traffic controls,” the councillor stated.

Cllr Gavin has vowed to investigate the matter further and look into how many schools in Mayo are still left without flashing amber lights. “All we are talking about is a pole and a simple warning sign to alert motorists to reduce their speed. There is no great cost involved for the council to get these signs erected and I want this matter addressed now. Every child is entitled to the same safety procedures while attending a national school and it is our responsibility to ensure that funding is in place to give them that protection,” commented Cllr Gavin
