39 Local Authority Units to be refurbished and relet - Calleary

Mayo Fianna Fáil TD Dara Calleary has welcomed the allocation of funding for Mayo County Council under the Voids Programme 2021.

Deputy Calleary said: "Mayo County Council, having made an application to the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage, has been allocated funding to carry out remedial works in order to bring 39 Council-owned vacant housing units back to productive use. Under the scheme, the Department will cover the cost of up to €11,000 per property for the refurbishment of standard vacant properties.

"Recognising that a small number of homes which are vacant do require significant investment to bring them back into use, local authorities can recoup an average of €50,000 per property for up to 10 per cent of their vacant stock.

"The refurbishment and re-letting of vacant social housing stock is vitally important across the country and here in Mayo where housing lists continue to grow. The programme will also lead to an added economic benefit with further employment generated for local builders, carpenters, painters, plumbers, electricians etc. I wish the Council every success with their endeavours."
