Independent Cllr Seamus Weir raised the issue of the link road in Ardagh that links the N59 and the L11211. He told the January meeting of the Ballina Municipal District that he had only recently become aware that the road in question was not in public ownership and it would take about €100,000 to bring it up to the standard required by the council to normally take this over. Cllr Weir said it was a vital road that got heavy usage. Senior executive engineer for Mayo County Council, Teresa Durcan, told the meeting that the road in question was quite unique, that it was in the middle of a very busy network of roads and not in public control as it is strategic to the surrounding areas. She said she would see if the council might be able to be in a position to take over the road in these exceptional circumstances without having to fund the normal cost of upgrading it before taking it in charge.
