Mayo book Rackard semi-final spot with stunning display

GAA: Nicky Rackard Cup; Mayo 1-24 Tyrone 0-9

Mayo picked up where they left off last weekend against Monaghan in Healy Park on Saturday afternoon where they put hosts Tyrone to the sword.

They went in leading by eleven points at the break after a hard working first 35 minutes in the Ulster venue on a score of 0-14 to 0-3.

David Kenny and Cathal Freeman covered the half-back line with purpose and poise and laid the foundation for the Mayo attack to do their business.

At the first water break they were 0-5 to 0-1 in front thanks to a brace of points from Shane Boland, with other scores coming from Freeman, Brian Morley and Eoin Delaney.

It was in the second quarter that they really found their groove with Boland adding three more points while Adrian Phillips and Corey Scahill chipped in with a brace as they kept the Tyrone threat at bay for the most part.

Mayo worked the ball well from defence and were threatening when ever they moved the ball into the opponents half and kept the scoreboard ticking over at regular intervals.

They bagged the first goal of the game not long after the restart when Eoin Delaney found Jason Coyne behind the cover and the Ballyhaunis man finished well to the back of the net from close range.

Tyrone did find a bit of a groove over the next few minutes with a string of points from Brannan Molloy, Damien Casey and Sean Og Grogan leaving the score oat 1-16 to 0-7 after 50 minutes.

Two quick fire points from Sean Regan and Scahill just before the second water break saw Mayo stretch that lead out to 14 points as the game entered the final quarter.

It was all about seeing it out for Derek Walsh’s side which they did with ease. Jason Cone, David Kenny and Cormac Phillips all tagged on points before half and hour had gone in the half and Walsh ran his full complement of subs with a Rackard Cup semi-final coming up in a fortnights time.

Tyrone did try to go for a goal a few time over the closing minutes, but were repelled by Mayo at every opportunity and they were also reduced to 14 men when Cormac Munroe was shown a second yellow card late one.

Mayo will be glad to have the week off before their semi-final as Walsh’s men look to have a serious run at picking up the title at the end of November.
