Kilmovee-Shamrocks and Kiltimagh looking for final spots

Ladies Football: Connacht IFC & JFC Semi-Finals

There’s no rest for the ladies from Kilmovee Shamrocks - fresh from seeing off St Brigid’s from Roscommon in last weekend's Connacht LGFA Intermediate Championships quarter-finals they are back in action this weekend looking for a place in the final.

The East Mayo side will be on the road again this weekend when they make the trip to North Leitrim to take on Glencar Manorhamilton on Sunday at 2pm.

Kilmovee-Shamrocks were put to the pin of their collars last weekend in Kiltoom before seeing off the Roscommon champions by two points at the end of a high-scoring encounter edging it 4-9 to 3-10.

A late Lisa Cafferkey pointed free was the vital score in keeping their noses in front down the final furlong as the looked to close out the game down to 14 players.

Lisa was the star of the show for her side, kicking 1-5 over the hour, while Shauna Golden hit 2-2 for her side and the other goal coming from Caroline Gorman.

Kilmovee-Shamrocks started that game off in the worst possible way, conceding an early goal just after throw-in, but they regrouped and put in a powerful display for the rest of the first half, going in leading 4-4 to 1-5 at half time.

However, their hosts came back strong and outscored them 2-5 to 0-5 in the second half, to have the game right in the melting pot in the closing stages.

The East Mayo side will be looking for another big showing from their Mayo trio of the Cafferkey sisters Lisa and Sinead and Shauna Golden on Sunday as they look to book a place in the provincial decider - which will be played against the winners of Naomh Anna Leitir Móir from Galway and Greevagh from Sligo.

Their opponents on Sunday competed in the Leitrim Senior Football Championship this term before dropping down to the intermediate grade for the provincial series. They claimed their first ever Leitrim Senior Championship this year, seeing off Seán O’Heslin’s 5-19 to 1-9 in their county final two weeks ago.

Kiltimagh looking to keep on kicking

Tomorrow afternoon Kiltimagh will be looking to keep up their winning ways when they make the trip to Tuam Stadium for 12pm to take on Galway champions Naomh Mhuire Oranmore in the Connacht LGFA Junior Football Championship Semi-Final.

Kiltimagh claimed the Mayo title three weeks ago following a tough battle against St Brigid’s, who they overcame thanks to a late surge of scoring when they had a player advantage due to a sin binning.

Their midfield duo of Dyna and Hazel Finn was the driving force behind that victory, hitting 1-4 each out of their side's total of 2-14 on the day. Other players to impress were half-forward Caoimhe Hession, who hit two points, as did full forward Lorna Shannon.

Their opponents saw off Salthill-Knockncarra 2-12 to 2-7 in the Galway final recently to claim their county title and will be stiff opposition for the East Mayo ladies tomorrow.
