Junior jostling up and running

GAA: Mayo Junior Football Championship

Fourteen of the fifteen teams looking to battle their way out of the ranks of the Mayo GAA Exclusive Junior Championship got their campaigns up and running last weekend.

The odd one out were Shrule-Glencorrib who are in the three team group alongside Ballycastle and Cill Chomain, and the south Mayo men will welcome Ballycastle to their patch on Sunday afternoon.

In group one last weekend there were big wins for Ardagh and Eastern Gaels to set themselves up for a crack at making the last eight this weekend if results go their way. Ardagh had 14 points to spare over Kilmovee Shamrocks in a 2-15 to 0-7 win, while last year's Junior B champions Eastern Gaels hit Moygownagh for 1-21 in Brickens. This weekend sees Eastern Gaels go to Kilmovee and Ardagh make the short trip to Moygownagh.

Kilmeena and Ballycroy were the big winners in group two with Kilmeena have ten points to spare over Killala on the road, the West Mayo men hit 2-18 in their win in north Mayo. Ballcroy were almost as high scoring running out 2-17 to 1-3 winners in Lacken. This weekend will see Ballycroy host Killala and Kilmeena welcoming Lacken to their home patch.

Last year's beaten county finalists Kilmaine got their charge for the cup up and running with a big 2-10 to 0-5 win over Achill on Sunday afternoon - after a number of near misses in recent years the south Mayo men will be believing this must be their year. The other game in group three saw Tourmakeady hit 0-11 on the road to see off Kilfian in north Mayo. The Gaeltacht men will be hosting Achill this weekend, while Kilmaine will host Kilfian.

The only game in the three team group four saw Cill Chomain see off near neighbours Ballycastle 0-13 to 0-6 in their north Mayo derby. Ballycastle will make the 200km round trip to south Mayo to take on Shurle-Glencorrib on Sunday afternoon.
