Mayo County Council paid tribute to the late Jack Charlton at its July monthly meeting on Monday last.

The former Republic of Ireland manager and World Cup winner was a familiar face in Mayo, particularly in Ballina, where he owned a home and enjoyed spending time fishing on the River Moy.

Independent Ballina Cllr Mark Duffy proposed a minute's silence in memory of Charlton, who passed away last week. A number of councillors from the Ballina area also paid tribute to the popular figure and his achievements as both a footballer and a manager.

They also paid tribute to Mr Charlton for the way he was with people in and around Mayo, saying he had no problem posing for photographs with people and that he always had great time to stop and talk to children when they came up to him.
