Twelve beaches in Mayo have excellent quality bathing water - EPA report finds

The quality of bathing water at 12 of 15 beaches in Mayo was found to be excellent, with a further three classified as having good quality water, according to the latest report from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA ).

Commenting on the report, EPA Director Dr Micheál Lehane said: "The improvements in bathing water quality are welcome and it is good to see local authorities identifying and classifying new bathing waters. Local authorities must remain vigilant to ensure public health is protected and continue to identify and fix sources of water pollution, which impact on our beaches."

The EPA's Bathing Water in Ireland 2019 report found that 95% (140 out of 147 ) of bathing waters assessed met or exceeded the minimum required - slightly up on 2018.

The 12 beaches in Mayo found to have excellent quality bathing water are as follows: Clare Island, Carrowmore in Louisburgh, Bertra in Murrisk, Mulranny, Dooega in Achill, Keem Bay in Achill, Dugort in Achill, Mullaghore in Belmullet, Elybay in Belmullet, Rinroe in Carrowtigue and Ross in Killala. The three beaches found to have good quality bathing water are: Carrowniskey in Lousiburgh, Old Head in Louisburgh and Golden Strand in Achill.
