Almost 16,500 receiving a Pandemic Unemployment Payment in Mayo

The number of people in Mayo who are in receipt of a Pandemic Unemployment Payment has increased again, according to the latest figures issued by the Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection.

The figures, which cover the period up to Tuesday, May 5 show there are 16,400 people in Mayo receiving a Pandemic Unemployment Payment from the state - an increase of 100 from the previous Tuesday. Nationally there were 598,000 people in receipt of a Pandemic Unemployment Payment on Tuesday, May 5, of which 256,200 were female and 341,800 were male.

The highest sector with people in receipt of the Pandemic Unemployment Payment is Accommodation and Food Service activities (128,500 ), followed by Wholesale and Retail Trade (90,300 ) and Construction (79,300 ). The 35 to 44 year old age bracket was the biggest age sector in receipt of a payment with 144,10; that was followed by the 25 to 34 year old age group with 137,700 people in that age rage and 122,500 under 25s receiving payment.

Also there were 39,100 people nationally, medically certified for receipt of a Covid-19 related Illness Benefit payment as of May 1, of which 22,100 are female and 17,000 are male - 900 of those were in Mayo - an increase of 100 on April 28 figures.

There are also now over 52,000 employers who have registered with the Revenue Commissioners for the Temporary Covid-19 Wage Subsidy Scheme (TWSS ). The payments are in addition to the approximate 205,000 people who were on the Live Register as of the end of March.
