Gardaí arrest and charge a man in connection with the burglary of two churches in Mayo

Gardaí in Castlebar have arrested and charged a man in his mid 20s in connection with the burglary of two churches in Mayo.

Last night Tuesday, April 28, Gardaí in Castlebar received a report of a burglary taking place at a church at Islandeady shortly before 5.30pm.

Gardaí responded and conducted a search. A man in his mid 20s was arrested and was detained at Westport Garda Station.

Property and cash believed to be stolen was recovered. During the course of the Garda investigation the suspect was linked to another theft from a church in Breaffy, which occurred on the same day.

The man was charged in relation to incidents at the two churches and is to appear before Castlebar District Court on May 6, 2020.

Gardai in Castlebar and Westport are appealing to anyone who was in the vicinity of these churches yesterday, Tuesday April 28, and who may have information in connection with these matters to make contact with Gardaí.
