Online fundraiser launched for MAASA

A Castlebar native has launched a GoFundMe campaign to try and raise funds for a permanent home for Mayo Addiction and Suicide Awareness (MASSA ).

Loretta Kenny has launched the campaign hoping to raise €100,000 to help enable the purchase and renovation of a property to give a home to MASSA, which was founded by Joe McGuire in 2012.

McGuire started the mental health enterprise eight years ago as a charity shop to raise money for mental health issues, stating that through speaking to people suffering from depression, addiction or suicidal thoughts, he realised that people needed a safe place to come and talk about their problems.

He then rented a bigger premises in Castlebar to facilitate a private space for people to talk and to put them in contact with somebody who could help them. As a long term lease is not available on the premises, MASSA has identified a building that would satisfy their needs. MASSA do not receive public funding and rely on the proceeds from the charity shop donations and other fundraising initiatives and have set a goal of raising €100,000 to enable them to purchase and renovate the property.
