Castlebar ready for the OsKaRs

We all know of the Oscars: Hollywood’s most famous night, where the movie industry comes together to celebrate the best productions and most enigmatic characters.

Hollywood glamour is now set to descend upon Castlebar on Saturday, February 22 as the town will be coming together to host its own OsKaRs Night in The Royal Theatre Castlebar to fundraise for local community sports projects.

For those of you who haven’t attended an OsKars event before, it’s an occasion not to be missed. The Hollywood red carpet will be rolled out, the paparazzi cameras will be flashing and the excitement levels will be electric!

This innovative fundraiser involves ordinary, everyday people recreating famous scenes from seven well-known movies, which are professionally shot and then shown on the big screen. Judges will score them for their performances, with an award ceremony for Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor and Best Actress. Kevin Rowe Events are on board to run the event - the agency behind Strictly Come Dancing.

Following successful casting and launch nights, over 80 locals of all ages have stepped up to the plate and are busy rehearsing and raising funds for their own tilt at securing one of those 'gold' statuettes on the night. A number of local sports stars have already signed up, such as GAA stars Paddy Durcan and Andy Moran.

Speaking about the OsKars, Paddy Durcan said: "It’s great to see the community rally together to raise funds for voluntary sport in Castlebar and I would encourage all in town to come out in force for what promises to be a great night.”

The seven beloved films and TV shows that will be paid tribute to on the night will be; Fr Ted, Bridesmaids, Veronica Guerin, The Blues Brothers, The Wind That Shakes the Barley, Waking Ned and that Roddy Doyle classic, The Snapper.

The OsKaRs is fundraising to support voluntary sporting organisations in the community with the aim of enhancing sporting facilities. Three sports clubs, Castlebar Celtic, Castlebar Mitchels and Castlebar Tennis Club have joined forces to work together, under the umbrella of the newly-formed ‘Castlebar Community Sports Project’.

The Castlebar Community Sports Project is the first organisation to bring the OsKaRs to Castlebar. Chairman, Shane Quigley said, adding: "We are extremely thankful to all those who are taking part, to our committee members and also to all the local businesses for their continued support."

This novel community-based effort promises to be a fantastic, fun-filled night and is sure to be well-attended. In the meantime, there are lots of fundraising events for each film cast occurring in and around the town which the public are encouraged to support.
