Well known runner heads west with sports massage course

Well known former triathlon and duathlon champion, sports massage therapist and founder of the National School for Remedial Therapy, Dave Corcoran has chosen Castlebar as the only venue outside Dublin for his next diploma programme in sports and remedial massage therapy.

Dave will officially launch the Sports Therapy Organisation (STO ) accredited diploma course at a special introductory seminar to be held in Lough Lannagh Castlebar this Thursday April 23 at 8pm.

At Thursday’s seminar Dave will outline how he turned his love of sport into a challenging and rewarding career and discuss the key steps in the prevention and treatment of sports injuries.

One of Ireland’s top sports massage therapists, Dave’s interest in sports massage therapy came about while he was training for triathlons and other running events.

“Due to the volume and intensity of training for triathlons and duathlons, injuries were common. I found that I had fewer injuries and recovered faster from them with regular sports massage and treatment from my wife Tina,” says Dave.

Currently Dave’s clients come from a variety of sporting backgrounds including athletics, football, GAA and triathlons. He has looked after Catherina McKiernan, Derval O’Rourke, Joanne Cuddihy, Jamie Costin and works with athletes from DCU and UCD.

“I mainly work on athletes probably because of my own background and I understand what its like not to be able to train. I am like a bull with a sore head if I can’t get out training, just ask my poor wife Tina,” jokes Dave.

Teaching massage therapy for the past eight years, Dave founded the National School for Remedial Therapy with Tina in 2002. The school offers training for those who want to develop a professional career in sports massage therapy, and offers a student focussed approach to learning using techniques drawn from NLP.

Dave’s other love is the Mayo countryside which he visits regularly since buying a second home near Pontoon some years ago. He is a regular participant in the Mayo races series held every summer and hopes to beat his own record this summer.

Says Dave: “I have always loved Mayo and since buying a second home outside Castlebar some years ago I have been looking for reasons to go back there on a regular basis.”

And it looks as if he has found it with the diploma course which starts on Saturday June 27 in Lough Lannagh, Castlebar and takes place over one weekend a month for a year.
