Mayo Children and Young People’s Services Committees (CYPSC ) this week launched the Mayo Children and Young People’s Plan 2018-2020 at the National Museum of Ireland, Turlough.
The plan, which consulted over 1,000 young people, parents and service providers across Mayo, is the first of its kind in Mayo and aims to improve outcomes for children and young people in the county.
The event was run in conjunction with young people from the Mayo Tusla Youth Advisory Group and Comhairle na nÓg, and senior representatives of partner organisations of Mayo CYPSC including Tusla, HSE, GMIT, Mayo Co Council, Mindspace, Sports Partnership, An Garda Siochana, Schools, Development Companies, Educational Training Board, Family Resource Centres and Western Regional Drug Task Force. Professor Ursula Kilkelly from UCC delivered a keynote speech.
The strategic plan aims to improve the outcomes for children and young people. The outcomes identified are ‘Active and Healthy’, ‘Safe and protected from harm’, ‘Achieving in all areas of learning and development’, ‘Economic security and opportunity’ and ‘Connected respected and contributing’. Young people consulted identified the best thing about living in Co Mayo is the fact that it is safe, and the worst is that there are not enough age-appropriate activities.
Speaking about the event, Paddy Martin, Area Manager, Tusla Mayo, said: "As chair of the Mayo Children and Young People’s Services Committee I am delighted to see the publication of our first Children and Young People Plan 2018-2020. Working together with other agencies we have identified some of the key needs and priorities of children, young people and families in our area. We look forward to working in partnership to deliver the actions identified and improve services and supports for children and young people so that they can grow up in a safe, happy and secure environment."
