€25,000 for six locally focused radio documentaries

Broadcasters in Mayo have received €25,970 between them from the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland's Sound and Vision Broadcasting Funding Scheme to create six locally focused radio documentaries.

Claremorris Community Radio have received €14,700 in funding to make three different documentaries (1 ) Making It: Mayo's Women in Business (€7,000 ) - The documentary will have in-depth interviews and reveal the challenges overcome by well known and lesser known female entrepreneurs and business leaders in Claremorris and South East Mayo - and what all of us can learn from them; (2 ) The Headford Lace Story: Craft, Connection, and Rural Regeneration (€4,730 ) - This documentary will tell the story of a lost craft industry, developed and mastered by women across three centuries, is recognised and celebrated and (3 ) Power to the Women – How rural electrification changed the lives of women in Ireland (€3,400 ) - which will tell the story of rural women's domestic lives experienced profound changes when electrical power finally reached their homes in the 1950s - 60s in the Claremorris area. Women who lived through it tell their stories.

Community Radio Castlebar has received €7,010 to make two documentaries: (1 ) The Nicest Window (€3,270 ) - Lough Lannagh sits in the middle of Castlebar like an oasis, playing an integral role in the community. This documentary tells the stories of the people who use the lake, its beauty, impact and importance in the quality of life of the town and (2 ) The Making of Fáinne Óir (€3,740 ) - a documentary which details and celebrates local woman Kathy Fahey's remarkable accomplishment of composing a ninety minute orchestral score.

Mid West Radio also received €3,830 for Brian Kenny for his documentary The Road Less Travelled - which is a documentary looking at the extraordinary life of Irish woman, Sister Bernadette MacNamara, who journeyed from her early life in Achill to end up fighting for civil rights of African Americans in Mississippi.

Commenting on the awarding of the funding Minister Michael Ring said: "It’s great to see radio producers in Mayo being supported to create programming which is locally focused. This funding enables our very talented broadcasters to tell stories which relate to our part of the world which we may not otherwise get to hear. I wish these local programme makers well and look forward to hearing the finished product."
