Fianna Fáil based Achill councillor, Paul McNamara, has called on Mayo County Council to carry out a survey to assess the cost of repairing a 300 meter stretch of road along the R319 near Cashel in Achill.

At the West Mayo Municipal District February meeting this week, Cllr McNamara said: "There is about 200 meters of road in question on the R319 in Achill at Cashel that is in a very poor state. In one section two cars can not pass, so if you are going or coming to Achill you have to pull in to let the car go - the problem also is there are three bridges there that need to get work done on them too. There is not the money to do them under the roads programme, could the council get the whole stretch surveyed and see how much it would cost to do the whole thing together - we will need to get a special allocation for it, because if it had to be done bridge by bridge it could take years."

Kieran Lynn, senior executive engineer with Mayo County Council, replied: "I will raise it with our bridge engineer, making an application like this and putting it together with a bit of scale makes a lot of sense."
