Fine Gael adds candidate in Castlebar

The Fine Gael Executive Council has added Donna Sheridan as a candidate for the Castlebar local election area in Mayo.

Ms Sheridan will contest the Local Elections on Friday, May 24, along with her party colleagues: Cllr Cyril Burke, Ger Deere and Eugene McCormack, who were all selected at the Castlebar convention on February 10 last.

Fine Gael’s Executive Council met on Wednesday night in Dublin and decided to add Ms Sheridan to the ticket in the Mayo constituency.

Ms Sheridan, a qualified teacher, is originally from Brownhall, Balla and now lives in Castlebar. She works for the Mayo, Sligo and Leitrim Education and Training Board as Further Education and Training Co-ordinator and is also a member of the TUI National Executive.

Sheridan said: "I am running as a candidate for the local elections because I want to make a difference in my local community. I have a passion for education and have worked in the sector for over ten years.

"Through meeting both students and their families, I have become aware of the problems facing individuals and families in the Castlebar electoral area. Further to this, I am aware of the issues facing local businesses, both large and small, and if elected I aim to help address all issues people encounter in dealing with the local authority and to influence policy making for the Castlebar Electoral Area."

Previously, her colleagues elected her as a member of the Mayo, Sligo and Leitrim Education and Training Board and also onto the National Executive of the Teachers Union of Ireland.

Sheridan went on to say: "I feel my experience in dealing with a wide range of issues at both local and national level, makes me the ideal candidate for the demanding position of county councillor.

"If elected I will ensure the concerns of all constituents, regardless of race, gender or age are voiced. I hope to meet as many people and community groups as possible during the campaign process and listen to the issues that people face each day.

"Castlebar is at the heart of Mayo. It’s true essence is the local community and I want to ensure this area and community thrive and prosper.

"I aim to ensure our young people have opportunities locally to enjoy an excellent quality of life, through local amenities, opportunities for high quality education and sustainable employment opportunities."
