Allergan employees recognised for practical work experience with school children

A number of employees of Allergan in Westport were recently recognised for their role in teaching Junior Achievement programmes to over 250 school children in Mayo and for providing the young people with an insight into what it is like to work at the plant.

The aim of the project is to inspire and motivate young people to maximise their potential, by valuing their education and seeing a future for themselves in the world of work.

Many of the Allergan volunteers taught the 'Our Universe' programme which covered topics including forensic science, healthy living, energy awareness, the body and skeleton and lasers and light.

The business volunteers taught over a period of five weeks and provided practical experience, guidance and encouragement to the students.

Commenting, Ray Fogarty of Junior Achievement said:

“The Allergan volunteers have done fantastic work with students in Mayo this year and we received excellent feedback from the teachers and principals of the schools involved. It’s a huge benefit for the students to have volunteers from the working world come in to their classroom as it gives them an insight into a range of varied roles and informs them of the opportunities that will be available to them in STEM subjects when they complete their education.”

Paul Coffey, Vice President & Plant General Manager at Allergan thanked the volunteers and presented them with certificates in recognition of their efforts.

”This is a truly fantastic program that Allergan are delighted to be involved with. Encouraging more students to study STEM subjects is extremely important for the future of the pharmaceutical industry in Ireland", he said.
